The extinct Cordoba fighting dog, Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Boxer, Great Dane, Spanish Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, Pyrenean Mastiff, and Pointer participated in the selection process.

Originally, the Dogo Argentino was considered a fighting dog. Yet, its hunting skills have made the breed a favorite companion of hunters. Strength, endurance, keen sense of smell, and courage made the Dogo Argentino the best breed for hunting not only wild boars but also peccaries and cougars.
