    Size

The height of the Russian blue reaches 20-25 centimeters, while the length ranges from 38-46 centimeters.

    Weight

An adult Russian blue typically weighs from 3 to 7 kilograms. However, their weight can vary significantly based on genetics, diet, and health.

    Lifespan

The lifespan of a Russian blue varies from 10 to 15 years. But still, remember, these numbers are only tentative and the life expectancy of your beloved friend depends on their healthy lifestyle and stress-free living environment. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet will significantly improve the quality of life of your companion animal.

    Fur

The Russian blue cat is embellished with short, gray-blue colored fur. This unique coat not only adds a distinctive look to this important member of the family, it also provides excellent protection in cold northern weather conditions.

Russian Blue requires minimal maintenance. However, to ensure the best conditions, it’s advisable to brush it once or twice a week. This northern breed is often found on the list of hypoallergenic cats which is especially beneficial for individuals who refuse to have a companion animal due to allergies.

  • Russian Blue Personality

Russian blue cats are known for their modest and reserved nature. They are often described as observant and curious companions. Because of their intelligence, representatives of the breed require both mental stimulation and physical activities. Despite its reserved nature, the breed is extremely loving. These important members of the family form a strong emotional bond with their human companions, and along with loyalty, often show the ability to deeply empathize with them.

Russian Blue is quite vocal and employs this ability most often to communicate with us. Despite this close contact with humans, Russian Blues never show dissatisfaction, even leaving alone at home for a long time. These felines especially like to look for hidden items and roost in high places while being all by themselves. No doubt, that’s a great opportunity to observe people and situations.

  • Potential Health Problems

Unlike other companion animals, the Russian Blue isn’t prone to the common health problems typical of the breed. However, your role as a competent parent is especially important to keep the case unchanged.

  • Nutrition & Feeding

Every cat is unique and each of them needs special food at each stage of development. For instance, feeding newborn kittens is significantly distinct from the nutrition of adult cats, and that’s not surprising, as a kitten requires a diverse balance of vital substances. While in the early stages of development, important members of our family receive the necessary minerals for the body from the mother’s milk, in adulthood they ought to get high-quality food specially designed for cats

It is a well-known fact that Russian blue cats never refuse food, so another issue that you should pay special attention to is monitoring their weight. Maintaining an optimal weight for your cat is the best way to prevent weight-related health problems such as diabetes and arthritis.

Before consulting a nutritionist and establishing a schedule tailored to your companion animal’s individual needs, we recommend feeding your important family member at the same time, two to three times a day. The instructions on the food packaging will greatly simplify this process. Don’t forget the importance of hydration. Adequate amounts of water will help your important family member avoid digestive problems as well as urinary tract problems.Unlike Moggie cats, Russian blue cats are not endowed with an unpretentious digestive system.  Therefore, avoid offering them your food, and even if you want to encourage them, take advantage of only cat food.

  • History of Origin

Not much is known about this rare breed, but it’s believed that the Russian Blue originated on Archangel Island (Arkhangelsk) in the northern part of Russia. It is because of the place of origin that the locals referred to them as Archangel’s cats. According to the Cat Fanciers’ Association, these important members of the family are descendants of felines owned by Russian royalty.

The Russian Blue migrated from northern Russia to England and northern Europe by ship in the mid-1860s and made its first public appearance in 1875 at the Crystal Palace in London.

The population of the Russian blue cat in Europe decreased during the Second World War. Nevertheless, enthusiasts actively tried to take care of the breed and preserve it in Scandinavia and Britain. After the war, breeders made a special effort to further refine this unique breed. With that in mind, some English breeders chose British Shorthairs, while others preferred Siamese cats.
