  • Detailed Information

    Size

Female Akitas typically stand between 61 and 66 centimeters in height, while males typically range from 66 to 71 centimeters. In terms of length, both female and male Akitas measure between 93 and 110 centimeters.

    Weight

The weight of an Akita can vary based on factors such as genetics, diet, and overall health. Typically, adult male Akitas weigh between 45.4 kilograms and 59 kilograms, while females tend to be slightly lighter, ranging from 31.8 to 45.4 kilograms.

    Lifespan

Akita’s life span ranges from 10 to 15 years and is equivalent to about 66-93 years of human life. However, remember, these figures are only conditional, and the life expectancy of your important family member depends on his healthy lifestyle and harmonious living environment.

    Fur

Just like Siberian Husky, the outer part of the Akita’s characteristic double coat is rough and straight, while the inner part is soft and dense. This double layer of fur helps insulate and protect the Akita from various weather conditions. Akitas shed their fur twice a year, usually in spring and fall. During this period, to avoid the discomfort associated with shedding, it is recommended to brush the Akita regularly.

  • Akita Personality

Known for loyalty, courage, and dignified behavior, the Akita is characterized by a confident and independent nature. These important members of the family feel happiest when they are allowed to spend time with their companion. Despite being distrustful of strangers, the Akita often shows care for loved ones and exactly this protective instinct makes it an excellent companion.

In addition to loyalty, these beloved companions are also known for their intelligence and insight. Akita is an independent thinker and sometimes may even show stubbornness. The formation of its character requires consistent and firm training starting from an early age, however, with proper socialization and training, the Akita makes a good-natured and obedient companion.

  • Potential Health Problems

    Hip dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a medical term that refers to a partial or complete loss of the hip joint. Hip dysplasia can cause bone wear and tear and pain associated with this process. Most companion animals have hip dysplasia from birth. If hip dysplasia is diagnosed at an early stage, you can easily correct the problem. In other cases, surgery may be needed to reposition the bones.

Although genetics play an important role in the development of this disease, maintaining a healthy weight is especially important to reduce stress on the joints. Daily walking and swimming will help to form the muscles around the pelvis and maintain their strength.

    Bloating

Bloating is considered a harmless problem for humans, however, in dogs, this condition can even be fatal. To prevent the problem, it is wise to pay attention to symptoms such as vomiting, a full stomach, or excessive salivation. If you notice any symptoms, please get in touch with your veterinarian immediately.

To avoid bloating, it is recommended to divide the daily ration of your faithful companion into at least 2-3 meals. We recommend that you also pay attention that your friend does not drink a lot of water after eating. To prevent bloat, competent parents often prefer special cups with a raised center. You can buy them at any pet store near your home.

    Entropion

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid is turned inward, causing the eyelashes to stick to the surface of the eye. If the edge of the eyelid is turned inward, the eyelashes will stick to the surface of the eyeball, which can lead to the formation of an ulcer. Entropion causes a sensation of something falling into the eye. Vets often use artificial tears and moisturizing ointments to soothe irritation.

    Dry skin

Dry skin is a common skin problem that often occurs in companion animals. Dry skin is characterized by increased sensitivity and pronounced itching. Insufficient intake of water and lack of vitamins may be the cause of dry skin. However, improper skin care and adverse climatic conditions such as dry air, sun, wind, frost, and air humidity are also noteworthy among the causes.

  • Nutrition & Feeding

Akita needs a balanced diet to meet its nutritional needs. Food rich in vitamins and microelements will help our companion animal to avoid health problems. You can protect the Akita’s digestive system by avoiding foods that are not recommended for companion animals. These foods include bacon, chocolate, avocado, grapes, raisins, mushrooms, and raw potatoes. However, this list is not limited to this and other products are not suitable for companion animals. That is why it is recommended to consult a nutritionist to get additional information related to nutrition.

The well-being of important members of our family depends on their immune system. To strengthen the immune system, it is desirable to promote the health of our faithful friends by providing vitamin C along with balanced food.

To take care of our beloved companion competently, it is advisable to take into account that due to the tendency to bloat, Akita’s diet should be selected wisely. That’s why we recommend consulting a nutritionist to get personal advice on companion animal nutrition and to create a balanced diet.

  • History of Origin

The Akita breed boasts a rich history dating back centuries. Originating from the Akita prefecture in Japan, these magnificent companion animals were bred by hunters to hunt large animals such as deer, boar, and bear. This process of selective breeding aimed to create a breed endowed with exceptional hunting skills, endurance, and courage.

Due to its place of origin, in the 17th century, the breed was referred to as the “Matagi Akita”. However, over time, the popularity of these important members of the family grew so much that soon the Akita attracted the attention of the Japanese nobility and became a symbol of prestige and security throughout Japan.

During World War II, food shortages and interbreeding with the German Shepherd threatened the purity of the Akita breed. However, post-war efforts meticulously preserved the distinctive characteristics of the species. Akita’s cultural importance was reinforced by Japan’s designation in 1931.
